Stanley Cup / NBA Finals

NBA FINALS

The Orlando Magic decided to make this a series last night. The three reasons why the Magic one are as follows:

1. Rafer Alston played the way he did to help lead the Magic to the Finals with 20 pts. and 4 assists.

2. Mickael Pietrus was absolutely clutch off the bench. He scored 18 pts. but it was Pietrus’s defense late against Kobe Bryant that helped preserve a win for the Magic.

Pietrus.

3. Relatively quietly, Dwight Howard went about his normal game. He put up a double-double with 21 pts. and 14 rebounds, but most importantly only had 1 turnover. Howard had been pretty dreadful the two previous games.

It’s not as if the Lakers just laid down and let the Magic take this one. Orlando went out and played tough, but still need to take Game 4 to get fully back in contention for the championship.

STANLEY CUP FINALS

As long as I can remember, the Detroit Red Wings have always been a constant champion. They are almost perfect in every part of the game, and have always been able to shut the door on a series. Last night, things changed.

Up 3-2, the Red Wings went into Pittsburgh looking to close out the Finals, for the second straight year, in Game 6. The game was scoreless until Jordan Staal scored the game’s first goal early in the second period. The Pens then added one more, before Detroit cut it close late in the third on a goal by Kris Draper. Somehow, the Penguins pulled this game out, with miraculous defense by Rob Scuderi and good goal tending from Marc Andre-Fleury. Crosby and Malkin were limited to non-factors again by Detroit.

Going in to Game 7, I think it’s pretty obvious who will win. The Penguins caught these champions on an off night, and while Detroit limits Crosby and Malkin like the entire series, they will shut the door in the series and hoist the Cup again. Also helps that the home team has won every game this series. Thankfully for Detroit, it will be in front of the home fans this year.
