Wassup Sports!?!?!?!?

17 year old Cale's very opinionated view on everything sports.

Philly Phavorite off to Houston

Amidst the trade rumors of Roy Halladay, and the signing of Pedro Martinez, one transaction went overlooked. A fan favorite, backup catcher Chris Coste, was placed on irrevocable waivers and was claimed by the Houston Astros.Coste

Known as the 33-year old rookie, Coste spent 12 years in the minor leagues before getting the call up to the majors with the Philadelphia Phillies. Coste’s hard nosed work ethic, easy going personality, incredible story, and flair for the dramatic made him an instant fan favorite in Philly. After getting the call in 2006, Coste had his best year in the majors, hitting .328 with 7 home runs and 32 RBIS. Two years later, Coste’s long journey finally paid off with a World Series Championship with the Phillies.

This year, it seems as if the Phils were trying to find any excuse to let Coste go. They traded for catcher Ronny Paulino in the offseason from the Pittsburgh Pirates, but he proved to be a total bust in spring training. The Phillies then signed veteran catcher Paul Bako, and carried three catchers for about three weeks. As Coste’s playing time dwindled, and John Mayberry Jr.’s excelling play, it became painfully obvious that the catcher’s run had ended in Philly.

Not only was Coste one of my favorites, but one of many others. It just shows today that sports really is a business, and in business, not much loyalty is involved.

  1. It is a business. The owners are in it to make money. Did you watch the all star game. Ryan Howard did his thing a big whiff. I am Philly Kid. I’ve been watching the bums do this since 1952(The year I was born).. Bobby Gee http://bobbygee.wordpress.com/

    • If I was in the business, I would use a little bit more loyalty. Yeah, Howard did his thing. It’s a shame none of the Phils made an impact on the All Star Game.
