NFL Season Preview: #32 Detroit Lions

with one comment

Overview: Last season, the Lions finished 0-16. Words cannot describe how terrible their season was, and it only can go up from there.

Offseason Moves: They have a new coach in Jim Schwartz, and Detroit picked Georgia QB Matthew Stafford with the first overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. They also added TE Brandon Pettigrew later in the first round. On the defensive side of the ball, the Lions acquired CBs Anthony Henry and Philip Buchanon, and LBs Julian Peterson and Larry Foote.

Upcoming Season: The Lions look to have improved on paper, but we all know that the winning takes place on the field. It is thought that Detroit will start QB Daunte Culpepper over Stafford, so the young QB can gain experience from watching on the bench.

Player to watch: Besides the obvious pick of Matthew Stafford, all reportsKevin Smithout of Lions camp is that second year running back Kevin Smith looks to have a big season. Coming out of a record setting college season, Smith rushed for 978 yards, which was quite the accomplishment behind that Lion’s offensive line. The O-line looks to have improved (again on paper), and Smith will be fresh every time he touches the ball because of the shared time with backup Rudi Johnson.

Prediction:5-11, 4th in NFC North

Yes, that’s right. I picked the Lions to win five games this season. Some may utterly disagree with me, but I look for the Lions to surprise. If I’m wrong, you can let me have it at the end of the season.
