NFL Season Preview: #29 Kansas City Chiefs

Overview: Last season, the Chiefs didn’t have a quarterback, had an injured running back in Larry Johnson, an unhappy tight end in Tony Gonzalez, and had only one true, good receiver in Dwayne Bowe. Combined with total team inconsistency led to the Chiefs 2-14 record in ’08.

Offseason Moves: The Chiefs were yet another team to get a new head coach. They hired former Arizona Cardinals’ offensive coordinator Todd Haley. Hiring Haley was new Chiefs’ GM, Scott Pioli, who came from New England. Pioli decided he wanted to bring some of his players over, trading for QB Matt Cassel and LB Mike Vrabel. To help the receiving core, the Chiefs signed WRs Bobby Engram and Amani Toomer. Kansas City also added to its stacked linebacking core with Zach Thomas, and signed often injured safety Mike Brown. To sure up the defensive line, the Chiefs took LSU DE Tyson Jackson third overall. Unfortunately, the Chiefs had to trade away fan favorite TE Tony Gonzalez.

Upcoming Season: The Chiefs should finally find consistency in QB Matt Cassel, and now have the receivers to support a good passing game. Kansas City has also kept RB Larry Johnson happy, so that should result in a totally balanced offense. The Chiefs’ defensive line has some question marks, but the rest of the defense should be solid throughout the season.

Matt CasselPlayer to watch: After not starting a game since high school, QB Matt Cassel came out of nowhere to lead the Patriots to a 10-6 record. Many question if Cassel was a one year wonder. With a receiving core that is slightly worse than New England’s, but a much better running game, Cassel will have to prove himself again.

Prediction: 9-7, 2nd in AFC West

The Chiefs look to have improved, and I think by seven games. They should easily be a player in the AFC playoff picture.
