NFL Season Preview: #20 Washington Redskins

with one comment

Overview: The Washington Redskins were a solid NFL team in ’08. Possibly one of the more solid in the league. They didn’t suffer through too many injuries. What plagued the Redskins was lack of inconsistency, and the big play. The Redskins’ longest offensive play of the season was only a 67 yard TD pass. Besides that, the offense scored, just not on a consistent basis.

Offseason Moves: The Redskins made the off season’s first big splash, signing former Titan DT Albert Haynesworth to the largest contract for a defensive lineman ever. Washington also bolstered their defense through the draft, selecting Texas DE Brian Orakpo in the first round. The Skins also traded away failed experiment DE Jason Taylor back to Miami. On the offensive side of the ball, Washington didn’t do too much changing. The Redskins signed WRs D.J. Hackett and Marques Hagans.

Upcoming Season: Last year, the Skins had high hopes for their offense. With the totally offensive directed draft, in which resulted WRs Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly, and TE Fred Davis, none really delivered. They had a combined 21 catches for 165 yards and no TDs. With a year of experience under their belts, and QB Jason Campbell hoping to keep his job by finding consistency, the Skins should be a much better offense this year. The defense must just continue staying consistent, and the Redskins will have a chance to compete in the division.

Player to watch: As previously stated, QB Jason Campbell is fighting forJason Campbell his job. With only 13 TD passes last season, which was one of the lowest in the playoffs, there were public trade attempts during theoff season. This is clearly Campbell’s last chance to get it done, and with the weapons surrounding him, he should be able to produce. It’s just a case of finding the consistency that has escaped him thus far in his career.

Prediction: 7-9, 4th in NFC East

Washington is perfectly capable of making the playoffs. I just don’t see the Redskins finding their consistency. Although, one thing that QB Jason Campbell will find after this season is a new home.
