NFL Season Preview: #13 Chicago Bears

with one comment

Overview: 2008 seems like 10 years ago for the Chicago Bears. No one remembers that at the beginning of last season there was a quarterback competition between QBs Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton, neither of which are with the club any more. RB Cedric Benson was still with the Bears at the beginning of last season. The 9-7 record the Bears finished with last season seems so long ago, and just proves what a difference a year makes.

Offseason Moves: Of course, the Bears traded away starting QB Kyle Orton and two first round picks to the Broncos for QB Jay Cutler. Chicago also let much criticized QB Rex Grossman go to Houston. On defense, the Bears added LB Pisa Tinoisamoa. There were very little moves by Chicago, but the acquisition of Cutler has expectations high for this season.

Upcoming Season: Yes, Chicago finally has a quarterback. The question is, who will QB Jay Cutler throw to? There is converted WR Devin Hester, who has big play ability. WR Rashied Davis has been thought to be able to see some playing time. WR Earl Bennett is liked for his speed. The problem is, none of these are #1 receivers. The Bears have a solid running game, led by RB Matt Forte, and Chicago has always been known for defense. There is just no passing game.

Devin HesterPlayer to watch: WR Devin Hester now has more pressure than ever. Hester will no longer be returning kicks, which is how he earned his reputation of big play ability. Now all that Hester is focused on is being a receiver, and the expectations are high. Unfortunately for Hester, he is the only reasonable target for Cutler, so he will be double teamed always. Look for Hester to put up bigger numbers than in ’08, but not the numbers of a true #1.

Predicition: 8-8, 3rd in NFC North

The teams ahead of the Bears are too good, and the lack of a passing game will hurt Chicago in the long run.
