NFL Season Preview: #11 Carolina Panthers

leave a comment »

Overview: The Panthers ran RBs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart to a 12-4 record in ’08, and a playoff  berth. Carolina then ran into the Arizona Cardinals, who were the hottest team in the NFL at the time, and QB Jake Delhomme threw 5 interceptions to end the Panthers’ season.

Offseason Moves: Carolina’s off season was more about locking up their key players. They signed T Jordan Gross to a six year contract, and used the franchise tag to bring back DE Julius Peppers. The additions the Panthers did make came via the draft, in which they selected Florida State DE Everette Brown and Troy CB Sherrod Martin in the second round.

Upcoming Season: Not much has changed for the Panthers, which means they will still run, run, and run some more. There’s no reason to believe that they wouldn’t be better this season either, because RB Jonathan Stewart has gotten past his rookie season and now can continue to progress. The defense is a solid group, but could use a few additions in the secondary and along the defensive line.

Jake DelhommePlayer to watch: QB Jake Delhomme is the first quarterback to have Tommy John Surgery. It is believed that Delhomme wasn’t necessarily 100% last season, and if he is now healthy, he can balance out the running attack. With WRs Steve Smith and Mushin Muhammad, Delhomme has weapons to succeed.

Prediction: 8-8, 2nd in NFC South

The Panthers have a rough schedule, and will see a drop off this season. Although, they should be in playoff contention come January.
