NFL Season Preview: #6 San Diego Chargers

leave a comment »

Overview: The Chargers were decimated by injury in ’08. LB Shawne Merriman was lost for the year before the regular season even started. RB LaDanian Tomlinson struggled with injuries down the stretch, along with QB Philip Rivers. San Diego limped to an 8-8 record and into the playoffs. Backup RB Darren Sproles had a super performance in the first round against Indianapolis, but the Chargers lost to Pittsburgh a week later.

Offseason Moves: San Diego didn’t really have to add too much during the off season, it was just a matter of the team getting healthy. The additions the Chargers did make started in the first round of the draft where the took Louisville DE Larry English. Besides this move, the Chargers made no other significant moves with their team.

Upcoming Season: With a fully healthy team, and a relatively weak division, the Chargers look primed to win the division, and make a run in the playoffs. They return QB Philip Rivers, who is the franchise quarterback and recently signed a long extension. RB LaDanian Tomlinson is fully healthy and ready to return to record breaking form. Tomlinson will be running behind a strong offensive line, and Rivers will be throwing to a strong group of receivers, led by WRs Vincent Jackson and Chris Chambers. The defense is healthy, and is led by LBs Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips, and CB Antonio Cromartie.

Darren SprolesPlayer to watch: RB Darren Sproles showed that he is a weapon in the playoffs, last season. He can return kicks, catch passes, and blow by defenders, as well as making them miss. With Tomlinson coming off a year of injuries, look for Sproles to get more touches in an effort to spell Tomlinson every now and then.

Prediction: 10-6, 1st in AFC West

The Chargers are undoubtedly the best team in the west, and look to make a deep run into the playoffs this season.
