Tonight May Be A Special Night

In Philadelphia this evening, some special things may happen. The Phillies can clinch the National League East with a victory or a Braves loss tonight. This division crown would be the Phillies’ third in a row, and would secure them a spot in the postseason. Although, tonight may also bring a first that I don’t believe anyone expected at the beginning of this season.

For the first time in Philadelphia Phillies history, someone other than the late Harry Kalas will be making the soundtrack to a Phillies clinching game. Tom McCarthy will be the first announcer since Harry Kalas to make a significant call, in a significant game.

Tom McCarthyAs everyone knows, longtime Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas passed away in April. Tom McCarthy filled in admirably that day, calling the Phils-Nats game, and quite well. Throughout the season, McCarthy has been the soundtrack to the Phillies season, and although no one will ever forget Kalas, McCarthy is about to record his own legacy with the club. Not only does it begin with the NL East Division clinching call, but it will go all through the playoffs. If the Phillies are fortunate enough to make the World Series, and win again, it will be something to look out for.

Being relatively young, McCarthy can now begin to cement himself in the hearts and minds of listeners with this call. Of course, the Phillies winning the crown will overshadow this, but to true Phils Phans, this call will mean more.
